Realme Buds Air TWS Review: Desirable truly wireless audio meets Realme’s reliability

Image
Realme has barely spent two years old as an independent smartphone brand. While we cannot overlook the benefits of being backed by parent OPPO in terms of manufacturing, distribution, and marketing dollars, Realme has been one of the fastest-growing smartphone brands because of its super-affordable products. Just when we thought smartphones couldn’t be cheaper than what Xiaomi sells them for, Realme proved us wrong by bringing exceedingly powerful specs at great prices . After its fair share of success as a smartphone company, Realme wants to forge a lifestyle brand persona for itself. With this decision, Realme has plunged into a new category of tech products – truly wireless stereo earphones . The Realme Buds Air are unmistakably inspired by the Apple AirPods, but they cost only ₹3,999 (~$60) and thus, cater to an entirely different audience. Buy: Realme Buds Air on Flipkart (₹3,999) || Realme online store Realme’s TWS earbuds come with wireless charging, a dynamic bass boost sou

Samsung trademarks "UTG", could mean Ultra Thin Glass for Z Flip and future Samsung foldables

Image
Foldable smartphones are certainly gaining a lot of attention as the new form factor challenges smartphone design as we know it. While we saw foldable smartphones and displays over the last year or so, they were all made with fragile plastic lenses atop the display panels. These are very easy to scratch and can easily cause damage to an otherwise expensive device. Rumors suggested that Samsung's upcoming Z Flip smartphone will use a new ultra-thin type of glass. The latest report from LetsGoDigital suggests a new patent from Samsung's lawyers submitted to the EUIPO (European Union...

FCC writes letter to Congress finding that "one or more" US carriers sold customer location data

Image
Over a year and a half ago, each of the four major US carriers was in some way involved with an incident that revealed how carriers were selling location data of its subscribers to whoever wanted to pay for them. It involved a couple of "middle men" companies who could eventually sell location data to whoever wanted to buy it. It eventually involved Securus, a prison company that used carrier information to track phones without owners' permission. On Friday, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai sent a letter to key members of Congress, declaring that the FCC has conducted its investigation and concluded...

Developers have exploited the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Note 9 to get root access on the Snapdragon models

Image
Samsung phones sold in the U.S. are notoriously difficult to root. Samsung Knox makes rooting especially annoying, and it tends to break a lot of things if you do manage to get root. Users in the U.S. can’t even unlock the bootloader to root their devices in the first place. Every once in awhile, though, developers figure out an exploit that allows us to root. The Snapdragon Galaxy S7 , Snapdragon Galaxy S8 , and Snapdragon Galaxy Note 8 were possible to root using exploits, for example. The same developers behind the SamPWND exploit for the S8/Note 8 are back again with exploits that allow for root access on the Snapdragon Galaxy S9 , Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9 — although there is a catch. Samsung Galaxy S9 XDA Forums ||| Samsung Galaxy S9+ XDA Forums Samsung Galaxy Note 9 XDA Forums The catch is that rooting the Snapdragon Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9 requires a certain Android version being installed on the devices. Root isn’t available for the devices on the up-t

6G theoretical speeds can go up to 1TB/s

Image
Sure, 5G is not even live in most countries and, but researchers are already working on the next-generation wireless network. The Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology recently started preparatory work and experts involved believe speeds can up to 8,000 times higher than the current 5G speeds. According to members of the working group, 6G can achieve mind-blowing speeds of around 1TB/s. Dozens of researchers and experts are on the job but we are still years away from its deployment. For reference, the current 5G network we are beginning to use has been in development since...

Nubia’s next Red Magic gaming phone may support 80W fast charging

Image
Nubia is a China-based company that is primarily known for making gaming phones. Previously, it was a subsidiary of ZTE, but since 2017, it’s considered to be an independent associate company after ZTE reduced its stake in it to 49.9%. In 2019, it released the Nubia Red Magic 3 gaming phone ( review ), which was an affordable Qualcomm Snapdragon 855-powered flagship with a 90Hz AMOLED display. In the second half of the year, it released the Nubia Z20 ( review ) with dual displays. While Nubia isn’t as well-known as the established market players in China, it’s managed to create its own niche. Earlier this month, its President and co-founder Ni Fei had revealed that its next flagship would have a 144Hz display—a feature supported by the new flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. Now, Mr. Fei has shared a post on Weibo that reveals another major feature of its upcoming Red Magic flagship: 80W fast charging. The post shared by Mr. Fei shows a photo of an upcoming Nubia phone that is usi

Samsung trademarks "Super ISO" for use with the Galaxy S20 phones

Image
Samsung has filed a request to trademark "Super ISO" with the UK Intellectual Property Office. According to Ice Universe this will be featured on the upcoming Galaxy S20 phones. "ISO" here refers to the light sensitivity of the camera - if you've ever played with manual mode on a camera, you'll know that darker scenes require higher ISO. The problem with that is that higher ISO equals higher noise, which is probably what this feature is about. The description of the trademark says that this relates to camera hardware and the image processing software. In short, this is probably a new...

Google releases OpenSK, an open-source 2FA security key platform

While Google has done a lot for mobile security, a little known fact about the company is that they love to dabble with security keys. The Titan line of security keys has full integration with your Android or iOS smartphone and can be used to authenticate your login to your Google account. Google has now launched OpenSK, an open-source project that will allow developers to create and build their own 2FA security key. OpenSK, written in Rust, is simple as it supports both the FIDO U2F and FIDO2 standards. It follows the legacy of other open-source projects such as Solo and Somu, another set of open-source security key platforms. Google’s hopes are that developers and security key manufacturers alike will benefit. By opening up OpenSK as a research platform, our hope is that it will be used by researchers, security key manufacturers, and enthusiasts to help develop innovative features and accelerate security key adoption. With this early release, developers will be able to flash Ope

The European Parliament votes in favor of a common charger despite Apple's protests

Image
Members of European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of a common charger, the resolution passed with 582-40. It urges the European Commission to adopt new rules by July that would make it so buyers don't necessarily get a new charger with each new device. A decade ago, the EU got major phone makers (among which Apple) to voluntarily move towards a common standard. Now MEPs believe that the voluntary approach has not worked out and new legislation needs to be passed. The resolution highlights wireless chargers as a way to reduce electronic waste, but notes that the rules written...

Counterpoint: Huawei overtakes Apple in 2019, Realme gains the most

Image
We've heard plenty of analyses in the past few days, and now we have another report to confirm that Huawei has overtaken Apple in the battle for the second place on the global smartphone market. Counterpoint Research revealed that Cupertino fell under 200 million shipments while its Chinese competitor reached almost 240 million. The analysts reported that switching 2019 strategies lead to improving some results, such as Samsung and its Galaxy A lineup and Apple's relatively more affordable iPhone 11. The non-Pro phone was actually the reason Apple to be the top smartphone maker in Q4...

All three Samsung Galaxy S20 phones pass through Geekbench with S865 chips, 12GB of RAM

Image
The three Galaxy S20 phones have taken their turn running Geekbench 5.1. The models headed to the South Korean and US markets, specifically, which are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 rather than a home-grown Samsung chipset (it seems that only European models will use Exynos 9830). Korean versions: Samsung Galaxy S20 • Galaxy S20+ • Galaxy S20 Ultra The trio packs 12GB of RAM (the value reported by the benchmark is lower as a part of RAM is reserved for the GPU). The benchmark score is essentially the same for all three phones and matches up with other upcoming Snapdragon...

Image
Huawei announced the Mate X foldable smartphone last year in February and later in September, it filed a patent with USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) for a new foldable smartphone with stylus support. Now, we are looking at another patent filed by the Chinese phone maker with EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office), and it reveals yet another foldable smartphone which could be the Mate X2. Huawei Mate X The patent describes a form factor similar to the first-gen Mate X, but there are some differences. For starters, the new phone folds inwards while...

Apex Legends is still on track for mobile release

The rise of the Battle Royale genre has taken all platforms by storm. After stirring up a storm on PC, games like PUBG, Fortnite, and Call of Duty swiftly made their way over to consoles and mobile devices. On mobile, the genre blew up even further, with games like PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty Mobile creating a cult following. In order to cash in on the growing mobile market, EA also announced that it would be bringing its battle royale title Apex Legends to mobile back in May last year. Now, according to a recent report from  PC Gamer , Electronic Arts is working with a partner in China to develop the mobile version of its popular battle royale game. The report cites a statement from EA’s Q3 earnings call which reveals that the company is still going strong on its plans to bring Apex Legends to mobile and also release the game in the Chinese market. During the earnings call, EA’s chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen reportedly said: “Rolling mobile out in China, you need to h
