First mention of Google “Pixel 5a” appears in AOSP

Image
Google has finally confirmed that a Google Pixel 4a would be arriving on August 3 and even teased the device on Thursday. On Friday, 9to5Google’s own Dylan Roussel spotted a mention of Google’s Pixel 5a. This was spotted in a code change on Google’s Android Open Source Project or AOSP. We are still waiting for the Google Pixel 5, which may not be released until later this year, but now we know that the 5a is now in development. The code change mentions devices since the Pixel 2, along with the version of Android they (launched/will launch) with. The Pixel 4/4a are listed with...

Netflix gains playback speed settings on Android

Image
Netflix will add playback speed controls to its Android app tomorrow. Once you get the new update, you will be able to choose 0.5x, 0.75x, 1.25x, and 1.5x, aside from 1x of course, which has been the only option up until now - and will remain the default. So if you're a fan of sped-up or slowed-down playback on Netflix, you will need to manually pick your favorite speed for every single title you want to watch. On the flip side, the playback speed options will be available regardless of whether you're streaming something or watching a show or movie that you have previously...

Reminder: Dark Sky for Android Dies Tomorrow

Read the original post: Reminder: Dark Sky for Android Dies Tomorrow Unless they have another change of heart and extend, Dark Sky for Android will shut down tomorrow, August 1. The popular weather app that Apple purchased and originally planned to kill on July 1 was given a month extension the last time we hit this end-of-life deadline. So far, they have not said that we’ll get another one. That means you finally need to decide on a Dark Sky alternative. As a reminder, Dark Sky the app is going away, but not the Dark Sky weather API that so many apps get their weather info from. The API is sticking around for other apps to use until the end of 2021, so you have a good year+ to continue to get its hyper-local information with quick weather alerts. Of course, we already put together a list of weather apps that you should consider starting tomorrow. We like Appy Weather here at DL, but Overdop is another really nice weather app, plus Shadow Weather will give you a similar look and...

Dark Sky Alternatives on Android: Overdrop, Today, and Appy Weather

Image
Read the original post: Dark Sky Alternatives on Android: Overdrop, Today, and Appy Weather The saddest Android-related news in a while dropped today, thanks to Apple (of course). Dark Sky, the hyperlocal weather app so many of us use for real-time weather changes, has been acquired by Apple and will cease to exist on Android come July 1. Apple is a meanieface once again. The end of Dark Sky has already sparked so many of you to ask for alternatives that could replace the incredible app that was Dark Sky. While I’m not sure there will ever be an equal, we do have a number of options to turn to. Dark Sky Alternatives on Android The biggest thing to look for in a weather replacements for Dark Sky on Android is whether or not they have access to the Dark Sky API, which isn’t dying yet. That’s right, unlike the Android app that dies on July 1, the Dark Sky API isn’t going anywhere until the end of 2021. So if you find an app that’s powered by Dark Sky, they’ll get that hyperlocal weat...

iQOO shows off its 120W fast charger that can fill a 4,000 mAh battery in 15 minutes

Image
iQOO showed off its latest fast charging system, which is capable of hitting 120 Watts. Interestingly, it’s faster than Oppo’s 125W system – when charging a 4,000 mAh battery, it needs only 15 minutes to hit 100% while the Oppo unit will take 20 minutes. iQOO uses a slightly different setup. The charger outputs 20V at 6A, then two charge pumps inside the phone convert that to two 5V 12A currents (these pumps are slightly more efficient too, 98.5%). Oppo’s system uses three charge pumps to convert the 20V 6.25A from the adapter to 10V 12.5A. As you can see, the two companies took...

Analysts: Huawei lead Q2 smartphone market, but Apple gained the most

Image
With the second quarter well behind our backs, reports from analysts start pouring in. Yesterday Canalys reported that Huawei surpassed Samsung and took the top step, and today two other agencies confirmed the lead switch - Counterpoint Research and Omdia. According to both, Samsung was affected the most by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, its sales going down over 25% on a yearly basis. In the same time, Apple was the only major player to increase shipments both on a quarterly and yearly basis. Omdia's numbers also show Tecno growing, while the rest of the top 10 all...

Oppo demoes its 125W flash charger, achieves 0-41% charge in 5 minutes

Image
Oppo made a live demonstration of its 125W flash charge system. The phone used in the demo has a 4,000 mAh battery and the new fast charger brought it up to from 0% to 41% in 5 minutes, a full charge took 20 minutes. Compare that to the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 from last year, which would have needed 30 minutes to charge the same battery. As you’ve probably noticed, the new system isn’t twice as fast despite having twice the top power throughput. This is because the charging speeds decrease as the battery fills up in order to prevent heat accumulation and protect the battery. Speaking of...

Realme V5 price leaks ahead of launch, it is around $245

Image
On Monday we’re going to see a new 5G midranger, called Realme V5. In the same time the phone with a model number RMX2111 popped up on AnTuTu, scoring exactly 301,380, which falls in line...

Redmi K30 Ultra is now on TENAA, could arrive on August 14

Image
Xiaomi is going to launch an updated version of its Redmi K30 Pro smartphone, which latest reports say will be named Redmi K30 Ultra. The new device with model number M2006J10C is now on TENAA with full specs sheet and pictures, and we see a lot of similarities with its siblings. However, there is one key difference - the new phone will skip on the Snapdragon 865 chipset and will appear with a new platform, likely by Mediatek. Redmi K30 Ultra on TENAA TENAA usually gives only the CPU frequency, but looking at the 2.6 GHz entry, we are likely looking at the Dimensity 1000+...

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra with Exynos chipset passes by Geekbench

Image
The Galaxy Note20 leaks have been coming thick and fast these days painting an increasingly clear picture of what’s to come at August 5’s Galaxy Unpacked event. In the meantime, the Note20 Ultra powered by the improved Exynos 990 has passed through Geekbench giving us an early look at its performance. The device bears the same SM-N986B model number which has been seen before and comes with 12GB RAM. Unsurprisingly it runs Android 10, presumably with One UI 2.5 on top. It managed 928 points in the single-core test and 2,721 in the multi-core department. These scores are comparable...

Motorola launched its cheapest 5G smartphone – powered by the Snapdragon 765. We’ve always known the Moto G to offer a compelling package at an affordable price and with the G 5G Plus, Moto brings 5G connectivity to the budget midrange segment. With a lot of other smartphones using the same processor populating this space, what makes the G 5G Plus stand out? The phone has a 6.7-inch LCD screen with 90Hz refresh rate, and a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio, making this one tall smartphone. The phone’s body is made up of a plastic frame and back panel, but we found plastic to offer a better...

Apple confirms rumors of slight delay in iPhone 12 shipments

Image
For some time now we've been hearing rumors about a delay this year in the start of shipments of the upcoming iPhone 12 family, compared to Apple's past release timelines. This wouldn't be anything very large, the story goes, but would shift things by a few weeks. Today during its earnings call for the third fiscal quarter of 2020 (also known as the second calendar quarter), Apple has pretty much confirmed this. Luca Maestri, the company's CFO, said that while last year Apple started selling the new iPhone generation in late September, in 2020 the company projects supply will be "available...

Google confirms Pixel 4a reveal coming on August 3

Image
Google's Pixel 4a, initially rumored to become official at the Google I/O conference in May - which didn't happen because of the coronavirus - is finally close to launch, it seems. A few days ago a new rumor gave what seems like the umpteenth presumptive unveiling date, namely August 3. And now Google has confirmed this, though in the most convoluted way possible. If you head to a new special page on the Google Store website, you'll get a puzzle based on 'lorem ipsum', a famous describer of placeholder web pages. If you solve the puzzle, you'll get the August 3 date, as well as a...

Verizon Launches LTE Home Internet to Serve Rural Customers

Read the original post: Verizon Launches LTE Home Internet to Serve Rural Customers Verizon has taken a page out of T-Mobile’s playbook this week with an announcement for new home internet serviced that uses their LTE network. Called LTE Home Internet , Verizon is giving rural customers a new internet option with a lower price for their own subscribers. To start, customers in Savannah, GA, Springfield, MO, and Tri Cities, TN/VA/KY, can sign-up or at least check to see if they are covered. I’d imagine if these first few areas go well, Verizon will expand across this country. Verizon’s LTE Home Internet costs $40/mo for Verizon Wireless customers or $60/mo for non-customers if they have autopay. Without autopay, each of those monthly prices goes up by $10/mo. On top of that cost, Verizon forces you to buy their LTE Home Router, which costs $240. However, if you buy the router through a 2-year contract device payment plan at $10/mo, they’ll wipe that cost out as a monthly credit. As...

Google Teases a New Phone, Likely the Pixel 4a

Image
Read the original post: Google Teases a New Phone, Likely the Pixel 4a Google is being sneaky with a phone that should have been released three months ago , it seems. Today, the Made by Google Twitter account changed the header image on its account and also the link in their profile to teases about a new phone. The link directs to store.google.com/intl/en/lorem-ipsum , which we assume is a cute placeholder joke for a device that will soon be announced. The page says “Introducing The Google…Phone,” and we know the Pixel 4a is just hanging out in storage rooms waiting to be sold after collecting dust all this time. The page has a bunch of filler text with features possibly embedded within it, like mentions of bokeh, “a lot of megapixels,” macro and low light shots, long lasting battery, and more. I think the Google Pixel 4a is finally coming, you guys. The page suggests August 3 is the date. // Google Store

Smack a Baseball Into Another Dimension Using the Infinity Gauntlet in Baseball Superstars 2020

Read the original post: Smack a Baseball Into Another Dimension Using the Infinity Gauntlet in Baseball Superstars 2020 A new baseball game from Gamevil is up for pre-registration on Google Play, but it’s not your typical baseball title. Baseball Superstars 2020 is a followup to a healthy list of games by the same title , which is actually an RPG series where you collect trainers who have fantastical powers on the diamond. If you watch the game’s trailer, you might be a little confused as to what to expect in terms of gameplay. However, the game’s description is straightforward enough. It reads, “Collect and upgrade cool and iconic trainers to help you on your epic journey to become the best baseball team in the Galaxy!” Considering it appears that some characters can literally smack a ball into another dimension while wielding the Infinity Gauntlet, I’m pretty excited for this. According to the pre-reg details, players will be able to manage a teams appearance, equipment, items, ...

Google Pixel 4a: Everything We Know, Just Not a Release Date (Updated: July 30)

Image
Read the original post: Google Pixel 4a: Everything We Know, Just Not a Release Date (Updated: July 30) The Google Pixel 4a was supposed to be the hotly anticipated follow-up to the Pixel 3a, an affordable Pixel phone that offered the Google camera experience we love with great software and an affordable price. But as this global pandemic shows no signs of slowing (at least in the US), we are still tracking and waiting for the 4a, which we all thought would have been here by now. Because this story has gone on long enough, this Pixel 4a hub should give you a good feel for what we can expect once it does arrive. Wait, will it arrive? What is the Pixel 4a and Google’s “a” line of phones? First kicking off with 2019’s Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL, Google decided it needed to not only play in the top-tier flagship phone space, it also wanted to offer a more affordable phone that still gave you the best of Google. The Pixel 3a provided a similar high-end camera experience to Google’s best ...

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G press renders leak

Image
The oft-rumored, much-leaked Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G will finally become official during the company's online Unpacked event on August 5. While we wait for that, here are a bunch of just-outed, fresh out of the oven press renders showcasing it in all its glory in two colors - Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black. As rumored countless times before, the inner screen now has a punch-hole selfie camera, and thus no more big, awkward side-notch. The outer screen is much improved too, now stretching to the edges and not coming with laughably huge top and bottom bezels like in the original Fold....

OnePlus 8T may have just passed through GeekBench

Image
OnePlus just announced the new Nord mid-ranger last week, but the company is surely busy also working on its next-gen flagship device. Over the past few years it's gotten us used to seeing one or two T devices around October-November, and it looks like that may happen again in 2020. A OnePlus handset with the model number KB2001 has just been spotted in the GeekBench database, and this could be the upcoming OnePlus 8T or the 8T Pro. It was running Android 11 when it ran the benchmark, which makes sense if the company sticks to its usual T device announcement timeline - Google should...

A Good Deal Today: Refurbished Samsung Galaxy Buds for $59.99

Read the original post: A Good Deal Today: Refurbished Samsung Galaxy Buds for $59.99 They may not be shiny and new like the Google Pixel Buds or OnePlus Buds, but at $59.99, these original Galaxy Buds are a heck of a deal. For today only, Best Buy will sell you a pair (in refurbished condition) for just that (originally $129.99). We’re big fans of the Samsung Galaxy Buds around here. I used them almost every day for a year up until the Pixel Buds arrived and I know that Tim used these before upgrading to the Galaxy Buds+. If you asked either of us if we had a recommendation for true wireless earbuds, there’s a chance we both point to these. You really can’t beat them for the set of features, battery life, and excellent sound. The original Galaxy Buds feature up to 6 hours of battery life on a single charge with an additional 7 hours from the case. They are tuned by AKG, allow for quick controls by tapping on each Bud, resist water and sweat, and should fit almost any ear with diff...

Apple saw a strong Q2 in China with 225% increase in iPhone sales

Image
Thanks to a boom in sales during the April - June period, Apple has been the fastest gainer in the smartphone sales in China with a reported 225% increase compared to the previous quarter. The data comes from Shanghai’s CINNO Research which reports a total of 13 million iPhone retail sales for the period, resulting in a 62% yearly increase. The large gains come after the weak iPhone sales in February where it was reported that Apple shipped only 500,000 phones in China. Since then, strong sales from the iPhone 11 in particular have helped Cupertino bounce back. The new iPhone SE (2020)...

Here’s the Galaxy Z Fold 2

Image
Read the original post: Here’s the Galaxy Z Fold 2 Last night, we saw our first actual photo of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 . Needless to say, Kellen seems awfully excited about it. Today, though, we’re getting our first good look at supposed renders of Samsung’s next foldable device, and my first reaction is that I want it so , so badly. Assuming these renders are legit, we can see there are at least two colors, a darker grey color, plus the bronze that Samsung seems keen on in the second half of 2020. The bronze is pretty ugly in my book, but whatever, no one will force me to use it. We can see the expanded exterior display, much larger than last year’s exterior display on the original Galaxy Fold. We can also clearly see the internal display’s hump is gone, with a cutout for a selfie camera taking its place. Overall, if you were a fan of the original, this thing is likely turning you on. It’s hot! If you didn’t like the original, you may not like this either, but you have to admit it’s...
