Nubia Z20 will have two OLED displays, Snapdragon 855 Plus, and 8K video recording

Nubia, the sub-brand of Chinese manufacturer ZTE, has been gaining popularity with its lineup of gaming smartphones. The Nubia Red Magic 3 (our review) feels like a smartphone limited to gamers, primarily because of its aggressive looks and a design which appeals on to a limited set of users. While the Red Magic 3 is likely to get upgraded with a Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset, Nubia is working on another flagship device with the same chipset to appeal to a wider population. The Nubia smartphone, supposedly the Nubia Z20, can be expected to feature OLED displays on the front as well as the back as one of its most exciting features. Other than that, the smartphone will feature Snapdragon 855 Plus and support up to 8K video recording.

The Nubia Z20 was recently listed on TENAA, revealing the key specifications of the smartphone. The dual camera is certainly an exciting bit and the dual-screen configuration includes a 6.42-inch OLED panel as the primary display while the display on the back measures 5.1-inch. Both of these OLED displays have a resolution of 2340×1080. The images on TENAA’s page only reveal a little about the display on the back but we can expect it to hide under the glass panel on the back when not in use, just like the Nubia X, which was the company’s earlier smartphone with dual screens.

The TENAA listing also reveals that the Nubia Z20 will measure 158.63 x 75.23 x 9.2 mm and weigh 186 grams. The smartphone will come in red color and similar to the Nubia X, the are dual fingerprint scanners on both sides of the frame so that you can unlock the smartphone using whichever finger is comfortable to you. There will be no headphone jack on the Nubia Z20.

The Nubia Z20 will come in multiple RAM options with 6GB, 8GB, and 12GB RAM to choose from. Additionally, there will be multiple storage options including 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. As mentioned above, the Z20 will be powered by the latest flagship SoC from Qualcomm and while the processor has not been mentioned clearly, the listed CPU frequency of 2.96GHz corresponds to Snapdragon 855 Plus. Additionally, there’s a 3,900mAh battery on the Nubia smartphone.

Based on the images, we can confirm that the Nubia Z20 will be equipped with triple cameras on the back. The secondary display allows the triple camera setup to be used for selfies as well, so there’s no need for a separate set of cameras on the front. While the TENAA listing does not specify the exact configuration of camera sensors on the smartphone, we do encounter mentions of a 48MP and a 16MP sensor. Nubia’s general manager, Ni Fei, has been sharing a lot of camera samples via Weibo, suggesting that apart from the primary camera (most likely the 48MP one), there will be a telephoto camera sensor and a wide-angle sensor as the secondary and the tertiary sensors. The executive has also hailed the super night mode as well as macro mode on the Nubia smartphone.

Nubia’s co-founder Willwong Wang Hui also shared many camera samples taken with the Z20’s camera on their trip to Chile showing some promising performance by the flagship. The smartphone could get 8K video recording but given that it has better cameras that we found on the Red Magic 3 during its review, we might get to see more refinement in this area. Additionally, Fei also talked about VR+ gaming on the smartphone at the GMIC conference in China last week, so we wait to see how that works out.

The Nubia Z20 launches on August 8th, which is when we’ll be able to confirm these specifications and get a better look at the dual-display setup on the smartphone.
