OnePlus 6 mod enables 70Hz screen refresh rate for smoother browsing

One of the hottest trends of 2019 and upcoming 2020 devices is high refresh rate displays. While Sharp had been playing around with such displays for a long time, Razer was the first OEM to put out a phone with a 120Hz LCD display in the western market. It didn’t immediately catch on, but other OEMs started slowly playing around with it, including ASUS. OnePlus was responsible for reviving the concept again with the OnePlus 7 Pro and its 90Hz AMOLED display, and ASUS released the ROG Phone II with a first-of-its-kind 120Hz AMOLED display.

Since it was discovered that the Xiaomi Mi 9’s display could be overclocked to 84Hz, though, modders started digging around other devices to try to overclock their displays. And indeed, other mods were found. A 75Hz display mod has also recently surfaced for the Redmi K20/Xiaomi Mi 9T and the Redmi K20 Pro. We are also getting an interesting 70Hz display mod for the OnePlus 6, which allows the phone’s display to run at a higher refresh rate and, thus, make everyday tasks a little bit smoother.

Now, be mindful that it is only a 10Hz jump from the stock 60Hz mode, so the difference won’t be nearly as notable as with phones like the OnePlus 7 Pro. It can also have an impact on battery life and, in the long run, there is a possibility that your device may be damaged. After all, the phone and its display are designed to run at 60Hz. Whether you want to try it out and use it permanently is completely up to you.

This particular mod is designed specifically for the OnePlus 6 and can’t be flashed to another phone. Not even its revision, the OnePlus 6T. Such a mod could also arise for devices like the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 6T, and even older phones like the OnePlus 5T and the OnePlus 5–it depends on whether there is someone out there willing to make the effort to pull it off.

OnePlus 8T goes on sale in the US
