OnePlus says they optimized Android TV on the OnePlus TV, offers at least 3 years of software support

OnePlus seems to never go too long without being in the news, but recently the company has been talking about something other than a phone. The OnePlus TV is coming soon and CEO Pete Lau has been teasing it a lot. In his latest post about the TV, Lau talks about how the work they have done with Google on Android TV will benefit the entire platform.

Lau talks about how companies that make TVs don’t typically focus on the same features as phone makers. OnePlus released the OnePlus 7 Pro with a heavy focus on the “fast and smooth” 90Hz display, which is as much about hardware as it is software. They are taking that same philosophy to the OnePlus TV.

OnePlus is not able to modify Android TV as much as they can modify Android on phones, but Lau tells India Today that there will be some differences in the Android TV OS on the OnePlus TV. “We have been able to work with Google on Android TV OS for the OnePlus TV and we have made improvements and optimizations that we believe are going to be part of the core of the software.” It’s true that Android TV can feel a bit sluggish at times, so any improvement there will be welcomed by everyone.

The last thing Lau boasts about is how their strong partnership with Google allows them to offer OnePlus TV users updates for at least 3 years. Now, on the surface, this sounds pretty good, but if you stop and think about the lifespan of a TV, it’s not that impressive. People are starting to keep phones for close to 3 years and TVs last much longer than that. Three years is a good start, but a TV needs longer support than a phone.
