YouTube Music now comes pre-installed on all devices launching with Android 9+

As you may know by now, YouTube Music is Google’s latest attempt at a working music streaming platform, looking to compete, toe to toe, with services like Spotify and Apple Music. It’s set to replace Google Play Music eventually, but while currently both services still co-exist, Google is pushing YouTube Music harder and more aggressively than ever. Still, they are far behind their biggest competitors in terms of subscribers. Google’s new measure to push YouTube Music adoption seems to be making it part of the regular GApps package on new smartphones. Devices launching with Android 9 and up out of the box will come with YouTube Music pre-installed.

Now, the app will be just a few taps away on your new device, for better or for worse. If you’re already a YouTube Music user then this will probably be cool news. And if you aren’t, well, this is part of Google’s efforts to boost its adoption. Back in the day, Google Play Music also came pre-installed on Android devices. Not only that, but it was also the default music player in many phones. YouTube Music still lacks some features compared to oldie GPM, particularly the ability to easily play your local music library, so it can’t really replace your default music player at the moment.

It is, however, still a decent streaming platform, and Google wants to encourage you to at least try it out for yourself. There is always the option to either uninstall the app or, in the case it’s a system app, disable it. Are you a YouTube Music user? What do you think about the platform?

Alongside the release of Android 8.0 Oreo, Google unveiled Project Treble : a major rearchitecting in the way the Android OS framework and the vendor HALs and Linux kernel communicate. The OnePlus 8T announced last week is now available for purchase in the US through OnePlus' online store with two color options - Lunar Silver and Aquamarine Green.
