Honor says the Honor 20 series will get Android Q

The ban on Huawei by the U.S. government has put millions of Huawei and Honor smartphone users in qualms about the future on Android updates on their devices. Upon coming into effect on August 19th, the ban is likely to result in the suspension of the Huawei’s license to use the commercial version of Android. If Huawei still chooses to update its devices, these devices might end up losing access to Google Play Services and other apps by Google. In spite of these conditions, Huawei and its sub-brand Honor have been assuring their users that devices will continue to receive updates, regardless of measures taken by the U.S. government.

Huawei recently expressed its “confidence” about rolling out the EMUI 10 update based on Android Q to at least 15 Huawei devices, to begin with. Now, the sub-brand Honor is asserting that the Honor 20 series will also receive the Android Q update. The Honor 20 series was launched last month and includes the Honor 20, the Honor 20 Pro, and the Honor 20 Lite (launched as the Honor 20i in India). All of these smartphones are slated to get the Android Q, but the exact timeline for availability has not been confirmed by Honor yet.

The Honor 20 and the Honor 20 Pro currently run on Honor’s Magic UI 2.1, which is basically EMUI 9.1 with a different name. While Android Q has been promised by the company, we don’t have concrete information about the branding for Magic UI. Huawei jumped from version 5.1 of EMUI based on Android 7.1 Nougat to EMUI 8.0 with the Android 8.0 Oreo update so that the EMUI version coincides with the Android version. Whether Magic UI will be labelled with version 3.0, 10.0, or something else is something we will only know when the devices actually receive the update.

Note: Huawei has stopped providing official bootloader unlock codes for its devices. Therefore, the bootloaders of their devices cannot be unlocked, which means that users cannot root or install custom ROMs.
