[Update: MWC Shanghai Showcase] Vivo teases 120W Super FlashCharge that fills a 4000 mAh battery in 13 minutes

Update: June 26, 2019; Vivo has showcased the Vivo Super FlashCharge 120 technology at MWC Shanghai 2019. Original article from from June 20, 2019 is as follows.

Android OEMs compete against each other in every aspect of a smartphone, providing users with the flexibility of choice. While areas like performance, display and camera have been traditional arenas of competition, companies have recently begun exploring new charging technologies to allow users even lesser downtime from their smartphones. We have seen Xiaomi show-off its 100W Super Charge Turbo technology that charged a demo unit with a 4,000 mAh battery from 0-100% in just 17 minutes. Now, Vivo has begun teasing its 120W Vivo Super FlashCharge technology with official posters and a teaser demo.

The teaser video was posted on Weibo (mirrored above) by Vivo’s product manager. The video showcases a phone charging rapidly from about 10% to 14% in just about 16 seconds. The video does not show a full charge cycle like Xiaomi showed off, but getting so much juice within a matter of seconds is really commendable. The poster released by Vivo claims that it can charge a 4,000 mAh battery in just 13 minutes, which would be faster than Xiaomi’s technology.

We have only seen limited demos of these new super fast charging technologies. Xiaomi has not released any commercial device with the new tech, and Vivo will likely only demonstrate the new tech at MWC Shanghai next week. Faster charging has drawbacks associated with it, like heat buildup due to slow and inadequate heat dissipation, and increased rate of battery degradation, and the companies which have demonstrated these technologies have not really detailed what they are doing to tackle the drawbacks. Needless to say, these quick charge techniques will make their way to consumers when their issues get ironed out, hopefully.

Update: Showcased at Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2019

At MWC Shanghai 2019, Vivo has showcased its new technology to attendees. This marks the first time such a technology has been witnessed outside of a controlled lab situation.

Vivo has also shared some details regarding the tech. Vivo’s Super FlashCharge 120W features a “new charge pump technology” with a “deeply customizable Type-C data cable and travel charger” that can charge devices at up to 20V/6A. This tech takes only 5 minutes to charge a 4,000 mAh battery from 0% to 50%, and a full charge takes only 13 minutes.

While there’s still no word on when we can see this tech in a consumer-ready device, even the act of showcasing it at a public event indicates that Vivo is fairly confident about the success of the technology. It remains to be seen how the company has tackled the drawbacks that are usually associated with faster charging.
