Microsoft OneDrive’s new Personal Vault gives files on your cloud storage an extra layer of security

Microsoft OneDrive just got a big upgrade, arriving in the form of 100GB of storage for the paid basic plan (up from 50GB, at no extra cost) and an extra layer of security for the new Personal Vault. The Personal Vault is available to all users of the service, though those using the basic and free tiers will have limited access. You can access it anywhere that you can access your OneDrive storage as well, which includes mobile. Personal Vault will begin rolling out soon in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada and will be available to everyone by the end of the year.

The Personal Vault is about what you’d expect, where files stored in it are encrypted (like the rest of your OneDrive storage) and protected by 2-factor authentication. While 2FA is available for all of OneDrive, the files that are protected in your vault will require you re-authenticate more often to access. Re-authentication can be via fingerprint, face, PIN, or a code sent to you via email or SMS, and you’ll be de-authenticated after a small period of inactivity.

What’s more, if you use a Windows 10 PC, your files will be synced from OneDrive to a BitLocker encrypted area of your hard drive. While Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise are the only versions of Windows 10 that can use BitLocker, this could mean that Microsoft is bringing BitLocker support to lower tiers of Windows as well, even if it’s just for OneDrive. Like all of your other files on OneDrive as well, your files in your Personal Vault are encrypted.

Along with the addition of a Personal Vault, the 50GB, $2/month plan has been bumped up to 100GB at no extra cost. Those using the included 1TB of storage with an Office 365 subscription can now also pay extra to get additional storage, if 1TB isn’t enough you can bump it up as high as 2TB for an additional $10 a month. It’s a crazy amount of storage, and not that expensive either.
